Therapies and Therapeutic Approaches
People's problems don't always neatly fit in one of the categories of problems or diagnoses where treatments have been well researched. As a clinical psychologist I specialise in developing integrative formulation-based treatments for clients' difficulties built on an understanding of basic psychological processes and incorporating techniques from different therapeutic models. I have training a number of specific therapies including but not limited to:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT therapies have been well researched and are recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for treatment of anxiety disorders and depression.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
A solid body of research has demonstrated the effectiveness of this therapy for treating post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). NICE recommends this treatment for PTSD (trauma focused CBT is also a NICE approved treatment for PTSD)
This is an integrative therapy for personality problems and disorders developed by Jeff Young in America and studied and widely applied in the Netherlands.
Action and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
ACT and CFT were developed by psychologists trained in empirically rooted CBT traditions to address some problems which don't respond well to traditional CBT. Their effectiveness is still being evaluated; inital results are promsing.
Emotion Focused Therapy
This is a well established and researched therapy not widely introduced in the UK at this time. The therapy helps people accept, express, regulate and transform emotion.
